Paediatrics
Paediatrics is a specialty which diagnoses and provides treatment for babies, infants, children and adolescents. Paediatrics is an area of medicine encompassing a variety of areas, including neonatal and paediatric intensive care, the management of disabled children, organisation of preventative services in the community and intensive treatment of children with cancer.
It focuses on the child within a family, working to minimise the adverse effects of disease and to allow children to live as normal a life as possible.
There are opportunities to develop skills in specialty areas including community paediatrics and neonatal intensive care and develop close links with primary care, child and adolescent psychiatry and public health, as well as other medical specialties, eg diabetes, cystic fibrosis and epilepsy.
